Building a Habit of Webcrafting
Looking for some ideas for things you can do to keep up your webcrafting hobby? We will assemble a list of ideas and resources on this mini-site over time, so be sure to check back periodically.
Ideas List
-
Try creating your own graphics. Custom graphics can make a site really stand out. You don't have to be a master illustrator to do this, either; just pick up a photo manipulation software, grab some free images, and get to editing.
-
Add a photo gallery to your website. No matter what kind of site you have, people will want to see some related pictures. If you already have a gallery, take the time to update it with any new images you've created or found.
-
Make an outlinks page, or maintain the one you already have. Surely there are some sites you've come across that you'd like to share with others. If there are pages that have a similar topic to yours, you could create a "further reading" section. Even just linking to your friends' sites is a good idea because it keeps your site from being a "dead end". If you already have a page like this, take the time to clean it up periodically by removing/updating broken links and adding new sites you've found.
-
Think about responsiveness. Does your page look good on all screen sizes? Do you want it to? If so, look into responsive web design. It may seem like an overwhelming task, but there are many small changes you can make to your site that will make a big difference.
-
Create a sitemap. If your site has so many pages that it has outgrown a simple navigation bar, consider making a webpage that lists all of your pages and sub-pages. Of course if you want people to organically explore your site and get lost in it like a labyrinth this may go against your intent. But if you want your visitors to easily find what they're looking for, a sitemap is a great tool.
-
Keep your ideas for your website on a list, and add a rough estimate of how long will they take. Not only this is a good tool to know yourself better and what can you handle; it's also a nifty tool for those days where you are out of inspiration. You can always go back to your list and do something you can finish in a day.
